SEO is one of the most extensive and complicated aspects of digital marketing! Similarly to trusting another person, building trust with search engines and customers means hundreds of little things over time.
SEO
for Small Businesses
We help American small businesses get found on Google and AI
SEO 101
Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the work of making your website easier for search engines to find, understand, and trust.
It should also make your website clearer and more useful for the people visiting it.
When someone searches, Google (or another search engine) compares websites, business listings, reviews, location information, content, and other signals. Its goal is to show the most useful, trusted and relevant results.
Good SEO makes it easier for Google to understand who you are, what you offer, where you work, and why your business may be a good match.
We help small businesses improve their websites, content, local presence, and authority so they have a better chance of appearing when the right people search.
What Goes Into SEO
Technical SEO
Technical SEO covers what happens behind the scenes. We check your website’s speed, security, mobile performance, broken links, errors, sitemap, and connection to Google Services. This helps search engines find, read, and index your pages properly.
Local SEO
Local SEO helps your business appear in searches tied to a city, community, or service area. Your Google Business Profile acts like a second website in local search, so we work on its information, categories, photos, reviews, services, and consistency across other business listings.
On-Page SEO
Every page should have a clear purpose. On-page SEO improves page titles, headings, written content, image descriptions, internal links, and overall structure. This helps people scan the page and helps search engines understand which searches it should appear for.
Content SEO
Content SEO answers the questions your customers are already asking. We create and improve service pages, blog posts, FAQs, location pages, project features, and other useful content based on real searches.
AI Search & AEO
People now search through Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and other answer engines. Answer engine optimization, or AEO, helps make your business information clear, accurate, and easy for these tools to understand.
Authority
Backlinks and mentions from trusted websites help build your business’s authority online. This may include business directories, industry associations, community organizations, news coverage, partners, and other reputable sources.
The Google Rule of Thumb
Google’s job is simple: give people the right information fast so they can make a decision.
Right: Your website matches what someone searched for and answers their questions clearly.
Fast: Your website loads quickly, works well on phones, and helps visitors find what they need without digging for it.
Over time, this helps to build TRUST with search engines.
No Tricks or Shortcuts
We all hear plenty of sales pitches from SEO companies claiming to have a secret formula, proprietary system, or new trick that will put them at the top of Google.
And years ago, web designers could repeat keywords, buy questionable links, and manipulate search results more easily. But remember that Google always catches on to tricks, and continually gets better at recognizing shady tactics.
Building trust with Google works much like building trust with a person. There is no shortcut to earning it long-term. Trust develops through consistent actions, useful information, real expertise, positive reviews, reputable links, and an honest business presence.
We don’t promise instant results or guaranteed number-one rankings. We focus on steady work over time that helps your customers and search engines better reasons to recommend your business.
SEO is a Long-Term Investment
Investing in SEO is kind of like contributing to a 401(k) or the stock market.
It’s not fast or sexy, but the work builds over time. The improvements become part of a website you own and can continue bringing in traffic long after the work is completed.
Ads stop working when you stop paying for them. Social media requires you to keep feeding platforms that ultimately belong to someone else. SEO still needs maintenance, but the work does not disappear the moment you slow down.
Occasionally, we make a change and see rankings improve quickly. More often, it takes around six months to begin seeing meaningful traction, and some businesses need longer. Your starting point, competition, service area, budget, and consistency all affect the timeline.
Do not wait until you are desperate for business to start working on SEO. Keep it moving in the background, even when your budget is small. We can work with almost any monthly budget and focus it on what will make the biggest difference.
When Should I Start SEO?
A new website gives your business a better foundation, but a website alone will not automatically bring in traffic or leads.
It’s like building a beautiful house in the middle of the woods without creating a road for anyone to reach it.
The best time to begin ongoing SEO is immediately after your new website launches. We can build on the basic SEO completed during development, help Google find and index the new pages, watch for problems, and start strengthening your visibility right away.
Your website will continue to need technical care, useful content, local visibility, and updates as your business and search engines change. A one-time website build is rarely enough to keep your visibility growing.
SEO does not have to happen all at once. Starting low and slow is better than letting a new website sit untouched for months. We can identify the most important work and move through it at a pace that fits your goals and budget.
How Monthly SEO Works
We begin by looking at your current website, rankings, competitors, service areas, and business goals. Then we decide what needs attention first. Monthly SEO work may include:
- Fixing technical problems
- Improving existing pages
- Writing new service pages, blogs, or FAQs
- Updating your Google Business Profile
- Building local listings and backlinks
- Researching keywords and customer questions
- Tracking rankings, traffic, and AI visibility
- Reporting what we completed and what comes next
Some months may focus heavily on technical repairs. Others may focus on content, local visibility, or new opportunities. We use your monthly budget where it can have the most impact.
Remember, YOU set the monthly budget!
Google Values Authenticity
AI has made it easy to fill the internet with generic, recycled content. As more of that content appears, real knowledge and firsthand experience matter more.
We handle the research, strategy, writing, technical work, and tracking, but we cannot manufacture your experience. Your stories, opinions, photos, recent projects, customer questions, and business updates give us the raw material to create content that actually sounds like you and says something useful.
Send us as much as you can possibly stand. Rough notes, phone photos, voice messages, quick updates, and unfinished ideas are all helpful. You do not need to understand SEO or write polished content. We’ll turn what you send into something your customers and search engines can use.
Reviews, relationships, referrals, and community involvement also provide real proof that website work alone cannot create. The best results happen when we combine our SEO experience with everything you know about your business.
Our Favorite Process
FAQs
How does the website process work?
We start with a short 15-30 minute discovery call. I’ll ask you a couple of questions about your business and tell you more about how I work. If we’re a good match, we’ll move on to the next phase where we’ll spend a chunk of time gathering information, photos, content, etc. and get a good strategy to move forward.
Once we’re in the design phase, most websites can be completed within 2-3 weeks, depending on the efficiency of our communication. You can have as many revisions as you need. Once we QA the site, we launch!
How much does a website cost?
Design & Strategy: After our discovery call, we’ll give you a ballpark estimate based on your needs. In general, our websites start at around $2,000.
Hosting: We create an account for you with a reputable host with your billing information so you can be sure that you always own your website. The cost of a basic hosting plan, a domain name, an SSL certificate (required), a website backup plan, and basic security is around $250/year. Again, that is paid directly to the website host.
Maintenance: Our required monthly maintenance is $40/month.
Why do you only use WordPress?
With 20 years of working with websites under our belt, we believe WordPress is the absolute best content management system to work with. There’s a reason that about 2/3 of all the websites in the world are created with WordPress!
At this time, we do not work on Squarespace, Wix, or any other content management system besides WordPress, but we’d be happy to redesign your current site in a WordPress environment.
Do I have to have monthly website maintenance?
That’s where we come in. Every day, our systems make sure your site is up to date. If it’s not up to date, it can either break the site or cause a vulnerability that hackers love to take advantage of. We require at least the most basic maintenance plan once we build your site.
